Let’s learn about the history of Dr Suresh Advani
Dr Suresh Advani was born on 1st August 1947 at Karachi and within 15 days his family was forced to migrate India due to the partition of the country.
At the age of 8, he got stuck with polio.Unfortunately, as there were not many facilities for the disease like polio back in 1955, he was left paralyzed from the waist down.
Education
He completed his schooling from a Sindhi medium school at Ghatkopar, Mumbai and become a graduate of the Somaiya College.
He decided to get a degree from Grand Medical College but this was not an easy process at an early stage as he was denied the admission due to his physically challenged condition.
After writing many request letters in order to get admission to the college head and the ministers, the dean of the college granted admission to Dr. Advani. It was his determination which made him reach here for where he wished and constantly kept working for it.
Dr Advani then went to do specialization in Oncology which did not have any facilities in India. So he traveled to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle where he got a chance to work with Dr E Donall Thomas who is a 1990’s Noble Prize winner.
Achievements in field of cancer
He pioneered stem cell transplantation in India.
He has successfully transplanted bone marrow into a nine-year-old girl down with myeloid leukemia from her brother.
Social Work
He and his wife Geeta are running an NGO Helping Hands which provides Holistic Cancer Care.
Helping Hand operates from Jaslok Hospital and Research Center with a group of volunteers who go themselves into the wards each day to keep a check and look after the psycho-social needs of the patients. They are provided with all kinds of information and the volunteers also play a significant role in breaking a number of myths and fears attached to cancer.
Most of the volunteers are cancer survivors themselves or have had their near and dear ones encounter this disease. This experience along with volunteer training sessions provided each month enables them to solve almost every query that patients and their relatives put forth.
Inspiration
Being a handicapped person, he has the courage to serve his life in eliminating cancer. His achievements are a core inspiration to many doctors, patients and people who know him.
