Genetics, Hair Fall and Remedies

Hairfall (Baldness) is a complete/partial lack of hair growth most commonly found in men begins above the vertex of the scalp. It’s a gradual process that rarely progresses to complete baldness.

We all desire to look our best every morning and a healthy scalp with beautiful hair is one of the most essential accessory we wish to wear every day. However, not all of us are fortunate enough and have to deal with our bad hair days which sometimes last up to months and years.

A major indicator of bad hair is the problem of hair fall which is common to men who fall prey to it. Hair fall is a common problem which invariably most of us relate to and face at one time or the other during our lifetime.

Poor nutrition including protein deficiency and low vitamin levels, hormonal imbalances, exposure to chemical treatments and heating as well as the regular use of sulfate loaded shampoos are the major reasons behind the cause of hair fall.

India is developing as a medical tourist destination and there is a steep rise in demand of hair transplant in Delhi and other cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and many more.

MALE PATTERN BALDNESS

Hair fall can sprout from many reasons but since there are so many causes that can actually lead to the breakage of hair, dying of its root and affecting further growth, it is not really possible to point out a single reason for this.

In medical terminology, hair loss is generally termed as alopecia. More than 50 percent of men above the age of 50 are affected by this disease. Male pattern baldness is associated with Androgens- a male hormone that regulates hair growth. Each hair has a growth cycle.

With male pattern baldness hair growth cycle weakens producing shorter and finer hair strands. Finally resulting to end of hair growth.

Male pattern baldness may begin in your teenage years, commonly occurring to adult men. Men who have close relatives with male pattern baldness are at a higher risk.

Are you losing hair at the temples or the crown of your head? You may have male pattern baldness. Some men get a single bald spot while others experience an “M” shape formation.

TRIGGERING FACTORS

Genetics is one of the main causes of male pattern baldness but there are many other factors contributing to the same.

The world is highly competitive these days and keeping a check on a healthy life cycle is a challenge. Having a busy schedule has a major role in stress generation leading to an unhealthy lifestyle.

Poor nutrition including protein deficiency and low vitamin levels, hormonal imbalances and exposure to heating are some of the other factors.

Chemical cosmetics and other hair styling equipment’s are a serious threat to hair growth and play a pivotal role in triggering hair fall. Regular use of sulfate loaded shampoos are the major reasons behind the cause of hair fall.

REMEDIES

There are few among many who believe “bald is beautiful” and they opt shaving off their head completely but for those who don’t there are remedies.

Hairstyles:

A hair dresser is someone who can give the right cut /hairstyle for men with limited hair loss to cover the affected area having baldness or hair thinning.

Wigs/Hairpieces:

Wigs can cover thinning hair, receding hairlines, and complete baldness. They come in a variety of textures styles and colors . Choose wig colors, styles, and textures that look similar to your original hair . Professional wig stylists can help you cater your baldness.

Weaves:

Wigs that are sewn into your natural hair are called hair weaves. You must have enough hair to sew the weave into. The advantage to weaves is during any physical activity they stay on . The disadvantages are they must be sewn again whenever new hair growth occurs and the sewing process can damage your natural hair.

Minoxidil:

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is a topical medication applied to the scalp. It slows hair loss for some men and stimulates the hair follicles for new growth . Minoxidil takes almost 12 months for visible results but hair loss re-occurs when you stop taking the medication.

Possible side effects associated with minoxidil include irritation, dryness , scaling of the scalp and burning . Visiting the doctor at an immediate effect is advisable if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • weight gain
  • swelling of the ankles, or abdomen, hands and face
  • lying down giving breathing issues
  • rapid heartbeat
  • chest pain
  • labored respiration

Hair Transplants:

A hair transplant is the most invasive and expensive treatment . Hair transplants work by removing hair from areas of the scalp that have active hair growth and transplanting them to thinning or balding areas of your scalp. Multiple treatments are often necessary, and the procedure carries the risk of scarring and infection. A permanent and natural look is the main advantage of Hair Transplant.

Counseling:

Going bald can be a big change. You may have trouble accepting your appearance. Anyone experiencing anxiety, depression, low self esteem or other emotional problems because of male pattern baldness should consult a good counselor to rebuild your lost confidence.
